Most of you are probably familiar with the story of Molly Hightower, the Port Orchard native and Bellarmine alum who worked as a volunteer at a Port-au-Prince orphanage and hospital, and who was killed in the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.

Her father, Mike, is General Manager of a Tacoma business - Service Steel Aerospace Corp. - and, in collaboration with his employer and inspired by a favorite cause of Molly's, he has established a shoe drive for the millions of refugees and displaced in Haiti.

For the next two weeks our drivers will be picking up any gently used tennis shoes for donation to the shoe drive.

Important details: Be sure to tie or bind the shoes together and to place them inside or on top of your Terra box.  We do not want to inadvertently take shoes off the front porch.  We will only take shoes that are either in or on top of the Terra boxes.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the families and individuals affected by the tragedy, those working in the relief efforts and those committed, like Molly, to progress and development in the nation of Haiti.

Re: Terra Organics Community Helps with Haiti Earthquake Relief

Thanks for being part of this effort, Terra Organics! Our bank branches are also collecting shoes through Feb 11th and I've put out the call to our local friends to help collect!

Re: Terra Organics Community Helps with Haiti Earthquake Relief

The remainder of the post that went out to Terra customers below and this www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/opinion/29collier.html) from the NY Times...

"My own hope and dream is that when things stabilize in the country we can find a coffee or fruit exporter that we can work with to bring Haitian products to Tacoma and to offer them to our customers. There is a lot of power in our economic choices, and there seems to be a consensus that one thing that can benefit underdeveloped countries throughout the world is access to the markets in the developed world. In countries where subsistence farming is the primary occupation for the majority of the population, agricultural commodities like coffee and mangoes are the first and best choice for export."

Re: Terra Organics Community Helps with Haiti Earthquake Relief

I've sent word out via the two local Yahoo groups I'm on, to see how many shoes we can gather. I have four of your boxes (SORRY!) so hopefully I'll fill them. This is a great idea - easy for people to do without having to leave home...
